Mark and Rosalie Balfour - Guatemala

We are pioneering a new path for Church Mission Society as we are the first CMS people in mission ever to work in Central America. We are working with street children and young people at risk in Guatemala City, offering them the opportunity to receive mentoring and to be equipped with vital life skills. In time, we hope to plant a new church community in La Terminal, the marketplace at the heart of the capital where there is currently little church presence. We believe that through encountering the transforming love and power of Jesus, real change can happen.

To serve the people who live and work in La Terminal, sharing the love of Jesus with them and – in time – to start a new church community

For a decade, we were involved in leading St Peter’s with St Mark’s church in Maidenhead, where Mark was vicar. Our call to Guatemala came after several visits to Central America – both to Guatemala and to Honduras. Rosalie has a degree in art and design and is also a qualified teacher of English as a foreign language.

We have two sons – Dylan, who is in university in York, and Sam who is married to Lois and is an officer in the Metropolitan Police. Dylan, Sam and Lois have spent time in Central America and share our heart for the region.

Rosalie remembers being a member of CMS Discoverers when she was around five years old, so she has known about CMS for a long time. Since our first conversations with staff at CMS, we have felt a strong pull to serve as part of the organisation. We enjoy being connected with the church all over the world. We know that this is where Jesus wants us to be; we love CMS’s passion for sharing Jesus and setting people free.
